CANON REALiS WUX6000 High Res LCOS Projector with DICOM
This “Installation” class projector from Canon is a very high resolution commercial model claiming 6000 lumens of light output.
It comes with a lot of features for business and commercial applications, including creating very large, high resolution images using multiple projectors. This model is significantly smaller and lighter than what we like to call “heavy metal” commercial installation projectors. However, it offers much of the same capabilities but in a relatively compact size, while still having the light output needed for large venue presentations. This model could also be suitable for some education applications, such as for use in a large lecture hall where the extra brightness is needed, as compared to the more common 3000 lumen classroom projectors.
The Canon REALiS WUX6000 is a high brightness (6000 lumen rating), high resolution (WUXGA, 1920 x 1200) projector that is aimed at projection venues where there is usually (if not always) a fair amount of ambient light, or a large screen size is needed. The WUX6000 earned our Special Interest Award by offering a good balance of performance, features and price for its intended role as a business/installation projector. We previously reviewed (in 2013) a Canon REALiS WX6000 (review is HERE), which has a lower resolution, but is otherwise similar to the model reviewed here.
The WUX6000 carries a MSRP of $5499 but that doesn’t include the lens. Canon offers 5 different lenses for use with this projector. Canon provided us with a medium throw lens, model RS-IL01ST (MSRP $749), that Canon considers the standard lens for use with this projector. This brings the total MSRP for the projector with the standard zoom lens to just under $6250, while the street price appears to be closer to $5000.
As you would expect from an installation class projector at this price point, the WUX6000 has a full set of features, including power zoom, focus and lens shift. Connection options are fairly minimal for a projector of this type, with inputs for only three video types (RGB, DVI-I and HDMI). There is also serial control, audio in/out. and wired network connectors.
The WUX6000 is designed for a permanent installation. However, it is smaller and lighter than many installation class projectors, making it quite usable as a portable projector when placed on a table or roll-around cart.
The WUX6000 can be connected to a wired network (LAN) allowing for control of the projector, as well as monitoring the projector’s status, scheduled maintenance and problem notification remotely.
The WUX6000 does not come with a lens, but for our review, we were provided with both he standard zoom lens (1.49 to 2.24:1) and a short throw zoom (1.0 to 1.5:1). There are three additional lens options, a long focus zoom lens, an ultra-long focus zoom lens and a short throw fixed lens. These lens options are explained in more detail in the “Special Features” section of this review.
There is also WUX5000 in this projector series that offers the same 1920 X 1200 resolution but is rated at a lower 5000 lumens and carries a lower $4999 MSRP. Both of these WUX models are also offered in a version that includes support for DICOM Simulation picture mode, that is intended for medical education and training. and is optimized for projecting black and white medical images (e.g., X-rays). These models are the WUX5000D and WUX6000D. Canon also offers several models in the REALiS WX series which have a lower 1440 x 900 resolution.
