CANON REALiS WUX6000 Projector Review – Hardware Tour

The WUX6000 has a boxy industrial design with a black case with very light-silver colored top (an optional black top cover is available from Canon at extra cost).  Facing the front panel of the projector, the lens is offset to the right of center with the projector placed on a table (as seen in the 1st gallery photo above).

Although it’s really designed for permanent mounting, the WUX6000’s two front adjustable feet, power zoom, focus and lens shift, allow it to be easily set up in either table or ceiling mounting installations.  This adjustability will usually make keystone correction unnecessary, but the WUX6000 offers a digital keystone correction that will account for any slight misalignment.

To the left of the lens is an air intake vent and below that is the IR receiver for the remote control.   The right side, as seen in the 2nd gallery photo above, is a solid panel with only some labels,  The rear of the projector, as seen in the 2nd and 3rd gallery photos, has a air exhaust vent toward the left, an IR receiver for the remote control below that, and a hinged door that provides access to the lamp on the right side.

The connector panel and the control panel are both located on the left side. of the projector and are described in detail below.

Connector Panel

The WUX6000’s connector panel, shown in the photo above, is located on the left side of the projector (as viewed from the front and when the projector is sitting on a table).  While this model offers fewer connections than some other business/installation projectors we have reviewed, it provides all of the essential ones for most applications

At the top of the connector panel is a row of 4 connectors for:  optional wired remote control (model RS-RC05), two audio inputs, and an audio output that can be used to connect to external amplified speakers.

The lower row of connectors include (from left to right):

A USB port for connecting to a flash drive.  This can be used for installing firmware updates or for providing images/photos for a presentation

DVI input that, when connected to a computer as the video source, can be used either as a digital video input or as an analog video input.

PC input (VGA style) that can used to input analog video in either RGB or YCbCr format.

HDMI digital video and audio input.

LAN Network port (RJ45)

Service/control port (i.e., RS-232 serial comm. port)

Control Panel

The projector’s control panel, as shown in the photo above, is located on the left side of the projector, just forward of the connector panel.  The above photo is rotated 90 degrees from the actual orientation on the projector.

The control panel has indicator lights for Power On, Standby, Warning, Lamp and Temperature.  Next to those indicator lights are buttons for Power, Menu, Input, and Lens.   Below those, in the photo above, are the menu navigation and selection buttons.  When the Lens button is pushed, the navigation buttons double as controls for lens shift, zoom and focus.  The left and right navigation buttons also serve as volume control up and down buttons.

The Lens

The five available Canon lenses compatable with the WUX6000 were already described in the Special Features of this review.   The first photo in the above gallery shows the standard zoom lens (medium throw) supplied with the projector for this review.  The 2nd thru 4th gallery photos show what is involved in installing the lens.  The 2nd gallery photo shows the lamp cover door opened and the top panel of the projector being removed (each held in place by a single screw).  The 3rd gallery photo shows the lens trim bracket, that surrounds the lens, being removed (4 screws must be first removed).  The 4th photo shows the lens already moved into place and being secured by tightening one of the 4 mounting screws.  There is an electrical cable (seen on the right side of the 4th gallery photo) that must also be plugged into a socket on the lens assembly, for the power focus, zoom, lens shift.  After the lens has been mounted the lens trim bracket, top cover and lamp door must be put back into place. and secured with screws.  While it only takes perhaps 10 minutes to install the lens, this is a lot longer than the few seconds that some other projectors require with their designs.

Remote Control

The remote supplied with the WUX6000 is a compact unit measuring approximately 5.3″ x 1.6″ x 0.9″.  There is no backlight provided.

The Power button is at the top-left of the remote and the Input button is at the top-right.  Below those is a row of 3 buttons to select power Focus, Zoom or Lens Shift.  Once selected an on-screen graphic is displayed and the Navigation arrows buttons are used to make the adjustment.

Next down are buttons for Aspect ratio and Auto PC (for when analog inputs are being used).  Below that is the 4-way Navigation buttons with and enter button (OK) at the center.

Just below the navigation buttons are the Menu button and a button for digital Keystone correction.

Next down up/down buttons for Volume and +/- buttons for Digital Zoom (which magnifies a portion of the image up to 12 times).  Between those is a button labeled “P. Timer“, which is not used with this projector model.

Finally at the bottom of the remote are two rows of 3 buttons each.  The first row has buttons for:  image Freeze, image Blanking and audio Mute.   The second row has buttons for:  switching the Image mode, adjusting the image Gamma, and switching the Lamp between full power and power-saver modes.
