Casio XJ-F210WN Projector Review

While most business and education projectors in the $1000 price range still use conventional lamp light sources, Casio uses a hybrid LED/Laser light source instead.  Although the XJ-F210WN may have an initial cost of $200 to $400 more than some competing lamp-based projectors, the life cycle cost for the Casio is very competitive.  This is because the rated life of this hybrid light source is “up to” 20,000 hours, which is about 4 to 6 times as long as a typical lamp.  Thus, the costs associated with multiple lamp replacements are eliminated.

Overall the XJ-F210WN produces a better picture than many other DLP projectors of this class that I have reviewed recently.  The XJ-F210WN received our Hot Product award for the combination of very good picture quality, low maintenance, good networking support, a good feature set and a built-in speaker that can play fairly loud.

Casio XJ-F210WN Overview

The Casio XJ-F210WN is a compact and moderately light weight, at 8.3 lbs., projector that is portable enough to be easily moved between classrooms or conference room.  It incorporates a hybrid laser/LED light engine rated at up to 20,000 of life and is spec’ed to put out a bright 3500 lumens (in brightest mode).  The long life hybrid light source and the lack of an air filter (i.e., that would require cleaning) makes this a very low maintenance model, and that should be a major selling point for the XJ-F210WN.

The XJ-F210WN is the top model in Casio’s “Advanced” series of projectors.  Other models include their XJ-F10X, XJ-F100W, and XJ-F20XN.  This line-up includes lower resolution/lower priced XGA models (i.e., XJ-F10X and XJ-F20XN) as well as WXGA model XJ-F100W ($899), that appears to be similar to the model reviewed here, but lacking the networking capabilities.

The XJ-F210WN has built-in networking support for connecting to a wired LAN and wireless networking is available with the addition of an optional wireless network adapter.  Also this model offers built-in memory enabling business presentations, e.g., slide shows, to be presented without the use of an external computer or other video source.  Alternatively, presentations can be stored on a USB flash drive and displayed without the need for connection to a computer.

Highlights

  • 3500 lumens (rated) max brightness – enough for conference room and classroom with moderate lighting
  • Very low maintenance with a long life hybrid light source and no air filter to clean or replace
  • WXGA resolution (i.e., 1280 x 800) – sufficient for most classroom or business presentations
  • Sharp image, limited only by the projector’s native WXGA resolution
  • Very good color accuracy with ‘Theater’ color mode (above average for a DLP business projector)
  • Built-in speaker that can produce fairly high volume levels making it suitable for use in rather large conference rooms and classrooms
  • 20,000 hour (rated) LED/laser light source with no lamps to replace, also color and brightness are more stable
  • More energy efficient than lamp based projectors of similar brightness
  • Excellent 3 year warranty and 5 years on the led/laser light source
