The Epson Home Cinema 2150 and its younger brother, the Home Cinema 2100, are here to replace the Home Cinema 2040 and 2045. Budget friendly and feature-laden for the home theater, both projectors are priced under $1,000. This 3LCD projector claims 2,500 lumens, a great contrast ratio, and lots of special features that improve upon those of its predecessor. In this first look review of the Home Cinema 2150, we will discuss the projector in a brief overview, speak on the 2150’s features and benefits, compare the projector to the 2045 as well as the 2100, and review the 2150’s highlights. Before we continue – what is a First Look Review? It’s something between our full-fledged reviews where we spend lots of time both watching projectors perform, and playing with the projector’s full feature set, and, the other extreme – putting up a manufacturer’s press release, as loaded with hype as they are, (as many sites do). In some cases, our First Look Reviews are done after we have had a brief look at the projector – at our facility, typically for just a few days. Other times, such as this time, we haven’t had a chance to play with the projector. In such cases, our goal is to apply a mix of insight and common sense to describe how this projector might fit your needs. This is something we like to do, especially when the projector is just announced, is expected to be very popular, and/or is a direct descendant (with limited differences) with a projector we’ve already reviewed. Enjoy! Overview The Epson Home Cinema 2150 is a 3LCD projector claiming 2,500 lumens – bright enough to deal with most instances of moderate ambient light. Its 3LCD technology plays a role in handling that ambient light. How? 3LCD projectors typically have the same amount of color lumens as they do white ones, meaning the colors will truly pop (typical of 3LCD and LCoS projectors). The 2150 is guilty as charged. The Home Cinema 2150 has full HD resolution (1920 x 1080), and can project a large enough image to fit a 132” diagonal screen. The 2150 has a typical lamp life rating – 4,000 hours at full power, 7,500 in ECO. The projector has a high contrast ratio of 60,000:1, although we tend to ignore contrast numbers. In the world of dynamic contrast, the numbers can be very misleading. Instead, we talk black level performance. That said, we won’t know how it performs until we have the unit in for review. The Home Cinema 2150 should have excellent color accuracy. This is an assumption made on the fact that its predecessor has impressive color, and that Epson home theater projectors tend to shine in this area, with their out-of-the-box color looking rather great. The 2150 has a built-in 10-watt mono speaker. It should be loud enough for most living rooms, media rooms, or dedicated home theaters, though this is a small speaker and as such, will likely leave something to be desired in terms of bass frequencies. You just won’t get robust sound from a speaker of this size, so I suggest hooking the Home Cinema 2150 up to a pair of external speakers or a proper sound system. If you know me from my other reviews, you will know how I feel on the matter. On-board speakers are great to have, don’t get me wrong, but often they just don’t measure up to the sound quality you can get from external speakers. I suggest this not to be an audio-snob, but because I know firsthand how much work and intention goes into the sound design of TV and films. So – if you want to experience your entertainment the way the creative people behind it intended you to hear, use external speakers. The Epson Home Cinema 2150 has a good number of other features that make this projector stand out from the competition, which we will cover in the next section.
