Hisense L5G 4K Smart Laser TV Review

A great addition to the Hisense line of ultra-short-throw projectors
A great addition to the Hisense line of ultra-short-throw projectors

The Hisense L5G is an X-Fusion laser-equipped, smart, ultra-short-throw projector with a brightness rated at 2,700 ANSI lumens that comes with a screen at $4,499 MSRP (120-inch) and $3,999 MSRP (100-inch).

Hisense introduced the world’s first Laser TV back in 2014. The L5G is Hisense’s fifth-generation Laser TV, designed to deliver more brightness than previous Hisense Laser TV projectors.

The Hisense L5G 4K Smart Laser looks to be a compelling addition to the current Hisense line of ultra-short-throw laser projectors.

Hisense also produces Laser Cinema projectors that don’t come with a screen and are nearly identical in features to Laser TVs. In truth, it’s all about how Hisense chooses to brand the devices. Hisense calls any ultra-short-throw projector bundled with a screen a Laser TV. If the projector does not come with a screen, Hisense brands it a Laser Cinema.

Today, consumers are starting to see Ultra-Short-Throw (UST) projectors as viable replacements for their living room televisions, thanks to advancements in light sources, imaging sensors, and proprietary processing technologies. Combine these three things with the steady decline of component costs, and these projectors are steadily growing their market share. Even traditional television makers such as LG and Samsung have entered this product category.

Vibrant color regardless of ambient room light
Vibrant color regardless of ambient room light

To effectively replace living room televisions, these projectors should offer three things. One, they have to be able to be used day or night. Two, they have to deliver vibrant color regardless of ambient room light. Three, these projectors must have all the functionality expected in flat-panel TVs.

Color performance sets the L5G apart from other brands of projectors. The Blue Laser + Phosphor Color Filter Light Engine exceeds the Rec.709 standard for UHD 4K, providing higher color accuracy, depth, and brilliance versus lamp-based projectors.

Hisense Laser TVs produce better sound than most stand-alone flat-panel televisions and entry-level soundbars. The L5G includes a high-quality 30-watt Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital sound system.
