InFocus IN1118HD Mobile Projector Review

InFocus is a well established manufacturer of projectors for the business and education market segments.  The IN1118HD, reviewed here, is a portable DLP projector designed for business presentations on the go.  It comes with a soft carrying case that holds the projector, remote, and cables.

The IN1118HD uses a single DLP display chip (i.e., DMD) with 1920 x 1080 resolution combined with a 6-segment color wheel and a conventional lamp light source.  The projector’s lens has a modest 1.3x zoom range and has manual zoom and focus adjustments.  There are no optical lens shift adjustments offered and the projected image has some vertical offset.  Thus, when the projector is placed level on a table, the bottom edge of the projected image will be a few inches higher than the position of the projector’s lens.

InFocus IN1118HD Overview

The IN1118HD is certainly larger and heavier than Pico and Pocket class projectors.  Even so, this “portable” projector is still rather light, at 3.5 pounds (approx. 5 pounds with carrying case, remote and cables), and small enough to satisfy the needs of many business “road warriors”.

Its primary use will probably be in conjunction with a connected PC, but the projector also can be used to directly make PC-free presentations from files stored on a USB memory drive or loaded into the projectors 4GB of internal flash memory.  Support is included for MS Office files as well as a few of the most popular photo and video formats.  Network support is not built-in, but InFocus offers an optional (i.e., extra cost) “Lightcast” USB drive that enables WiFi support.

Like most other DLP business projectors, this model uses a color wheel that includes a clear segment that is used to pump-up the projected white levels but at the penalty of producing muted (i.e., dim) colors.  While this can produce brighter images that can be useful for certain types of business presentations, the image brightness drops dramatically when the projector is configured to produce the more accurate colors, such as when wanting to display photos or videos with accurate colors.  This is not unique to the this projector model, but is a characteristics of most DLP single chip business and classroom projectors.
