The HU85LS is a 4K Ultra-Short Throw Laser Smart Projector. The term “Laser TV” has also been adopted by other manufacturers to describe projectors in this category. It is much easier than saying “4K DLP Ultra-Short Throw Laser Smart Projector”.
While Laser TV‘s were designed to replace a traditional flat panel in a customer’s home, they offer several features that would be useful in an office or classroom. With the exception of the model number and warranty, the LG HU85LS is identical to LG’s consumer version, the HU85LA. The units are just sold in different channels for different application. Check out our review of the HU85LA:
Since the HU85LS is designed to serve as a TV replacement, it includes most of the features you would find in a Smart flat panel TV including a TV tuner, internal speakers, and of course Smart features.
To make the HU85LS as Smart as possible, LG utilizes the same ThinQ AI webOS that is offered in their lineup of Smart flat panel TVs. Like their Smart TVs, the HU85LS can be voice controlled and offers a wide variety of apps. The ability to simply connect a variety of wireless devices, access the Internet and explore streaming content is beneficial whether you’re in an office or in your living room.
Since the HU85LS is a DLP projector with a Laser light engine, it should deliver years of maintenance free operation which is great in a commercial application.
The LG HU85LS is a 4K DLP Laser Ultra-Short Throw Smart Projector with a suggested retail price of $5,999. While the HU85LA commands a premium price, it offers a lot of performance and features for its price. The LG HU85LS has a rated brightness of 2700 lumen, and its Laser light source will last up to 20,000 hours.
HU85LS is a 2716x1528x2 pixel shifter – using the larger DLP (0.66″ DMD )chip. This results in higher native contrast and a sharper image than most 4K UHD DLP projectors, which use the smaller 1920x1080px4 pixel shifting chip.
The projector’s chassis sits less than 8 inches from 120” screen, so it can be placed on a credenza or table in the front of the room. There’s even AV furniture designed specifically to hold the LG Laser TV Chassis.
You could easily make a case for utilizing a projector as a TV replacement, especially since projectors can produce a massive picture from a compact chassis, which makes them a great solution for a conference or other meeting rooms.
There are usually several shortcomings when you compare most projectors with a flat panel TV. For example, the lamp in a traditional projector dims over time and must be changed every few thousand hours. This is not only inconvenient, but it adds additional cost to operation. This shortcoming is eliminated by the Laser illumination found in the HU85LS, which can provide years of maintenance free operation.
The HU85LS sports a dual Laser light engine using both a red and blue Laser. This increases the projector’s color gamut coverage and eliminates the need for a spinning phosphor wheel, which reduces the rainbow effect common on many DLP projectors.
Most projectors are not very Smart, and they lack capabilities such as streaming apps that are common on most flat panel TV’s today. The HU85LS utilizes LG webOS, like what is found their newest flat panel TVs. You have all the apps and capabilities normally found in a Smart TV, including Google Assistant, which allows you to control not only the projector but a wide variety of compatible Smart home devices using your voice.
The HU85LS is compatible with both HDR10 and HLG content and even equipped with Dynamic HDR Tone Mapping.
The LG HU85LS Laser TV combines all the Smart capabilities of flat panel TVs with the long life of a high-quality Laser light engine and 4K resolution to create a true flat panel TV replacement.
