Native 8K projection is a major challenge for projector manufacturers. It means packing far higher pixel density into each chip/panel. For this reason, for the next few years, expect most 8K capable projectors to be pixel shifting 4K projectors, rather than native 8K. The promise of 8K on the screen is another game-changer. There is no reason why you can’t sit four or 5 feet back from a 150-inch screen. Talk about full immersion! As of May 2022, there are no native 8K projectors on the market. and the least expensive 8K capable projectors are still cost-prohibitive to many customers. Now 4K capable projectors are available for below a thousand dollars. While there is a lack of 8K projectors and content available today, that will change over the next couple of years. We’ve seen 8K demonstrations at trade shows. Digital Projection (a high-end projector company) has shown a native 8K projector for over a year now. 8K pixel shifting projector with native 4K imagers will be the first widely available models that can display accept 8K signals and display 8K resolution onscreen. In September 2021, JVC announced a new series of 8K e-shift equipped D-ILA home theater projectors. While the units still utilize native 4K DILA panels they employ an improved version of JVC’s pixel-shifting technology called 8K e-shiftX to deliver 8K onscreen resolution. Unlike the previous 8K e-shift model, the RS3000, also include 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 inputs so the new models can accept and display 8K/60p and 4K/120p material.
