Sony is one of the most recognizable projector manufacturers in the home theater market. They offer both 4K and 1080p in their lineup of LCoS (SXRD) projectors. Unlike most flat panels Sony Home Theater projectors still support 3D.
Sony was the first company to introduce a 4K projector and they still have the widest product selection. All Sony 4K HDR home theater projectors utilize three SXRD panels to deliver true 4K resolution (4096 x 2160).
Beginning in 2021, all Sony 4K SXRD models benefit from a version of Sony’s powerful X1 processor that has been optimized specially for projector applications. Even the entry-level models “wow” with the ability to do frame-by-frame HDR tone mapping.
All Sony home theater projectors use 3 SXRD panels which is Sony’s version of LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon). Sony and JVC, the two dominant home theater brands between $5000 and $30,000, both rely on LCoS panels because these panels can deliver more native contrast than standard LCD panels or DLP chips used in consumer displays.
The black level performance of Sony Home Theater projectors is uniformly excellent; Sony models might not be the best in the world of projectors, but they are very close.
Sony has a total of seven 4K SXRD Home Theater projectors in their lineup starting with the VW325ES ($5,500) and $80,000 (minus lens) GTZ380 at the top of the heap. The VW915ES ($20,000) is the least expensive Home Theater model equipped with a laser light source.
Sony also produces many 3LCD projectors for the business and educational markets, as well as projector models designed for fixed installations in churches, auditoriums, and conference centers.
